MEASURING AND COMPARING VOLUME OF LIQUID

STAGES OF CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT FOR VOLUME OF LIQUID

1. Reading scales to the nearest division;
2. Introducing the units of volume of liquid, milliliters and litres in the metric system;
3. Measure and record volumes of liquid standard units, milliliters and litres;
4. Comparing tha volume of two liquid using standard units;
5. Estimate volume of liquid in milliliters and litres;
6. Use the relationship between litres and millitres
7. Add and subtract units of volume of liquid.

MEASURING AND COMPARING VOLUME OF LIQUID

ACTIVITY 0NE

( 1 ) Learning outcomes: To measure and compare volume of liquid using non-standard units

( 2 ) Materials:
( a ) Various small containers of different sizes
( b ) A large water jug.

3 ) Procedures:
( a ) Divide the class into groups of five students and have them work in their cooperative groups.
( b ) Appoint one student in the group to be the recorder.
( c ) Give each group a set of containers of different sizes and a large water jug.
( d ) Have the student fill the large jug with water.
( e ) Have the students estimate the number of cup needed to contain all the water in the large jug.
( f ) Have the students fill the cups to check their estimate.
( g ) Repeat for the other smaller containers.
( h ) List the containers in the order from the smallest to the largest.

ACTIVITY TWO

( 1 ) Learning outcomes;
To estimate and compare volume if liquid.

( 2 ) Materials:
Sets games cards.

( 3 ) Procedures:
( a ) Have the student work in groups of three students.
( b ) Make duplicates of the games cards and cut out the cards.
( c ) Give each group a set of the cards.
( d ) Shuffle the cards and divide the cards equally between the students.
( e ) At the count of four, the student open a cards and lay it opened on the table.
( f ) Looking at the cards opened, the student estimate and compare the volume
of the liquid on the cards. The student with the bigger volume of liquid
gets to keep his partner’s card.
( g ) If the cards show the same volume of liquid, neither of them gets to keep
each other’s card.
( h ) When all the cards are opened, the students count how many cards they
have. The winner is the child with most cards. ( Refer table 1 )

ACTIVITY THREE

( 1 ) Learning outcomes:
To measure and compare volume of liquid using standard units of milliliters
(ml ) and litres ( l ).

( 2 ) Materials:
( a ) Various everyday containers, for example, cup, glasses, jugs, spoons and
Margarine containers.
( b ) A litre ( l ) and 500 -millilitre ( ml ) measuring cylinders.

( 3 ) Procedures:
( a ) Divide the class into groups of five students and have them in their
cooperative groups.
( b ) Appoint one student in the group to be the recorder.
( c ) Gives each group a set of container of different sizes.
( d ) Give each group a 500 millilitres and a litre measuring cylinders.
( e ) Have the students fill each of the container.
( f ) Have the student estimate the capacity of each container.
( g ) Have the students measure the liquid in each container to check their
estimate.
